This module uses an interactive case scenario approach to help those involved in nursing care to gain the knowledge required to identify when a mental illness might be present and how to respond to this. It is aimed at anyone providing care, either regularly or sporadically, to a person with an intellectual disability.

Key learning outcomes

By the end of this module participants will be able to:

  1. identify the reasons why a person with an intellectual disability might be likely to have a mental illness
  2. identify the challenges in recognising mental illness in people with intellectual disability
  3. describe how to support an individual with a mental illness and intellectual disability.
