Intimate partner violence: what it is, who is at risk and who does it affect?

This module provides an overview of intimate partner violence (IPV) in the Australian context for nurses. Nurses regularly encounter people experiencing IPV. However, the survivors may not disclose, and nurses may not recognise, IPV.

Key learning outcomes

At the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  1. discuss risk factors for IPV
  2. understand the nature and magnitude of intimate partner violence (IPV)
  3. identify the various types of IPV
  4. describe the effects of IPV on individuals experiencing it and their children.

Screening and assessment for family violence

Online CPD module enrolment

1 hour CPD.  

$20 credit.  

Family violence is a significant health problem in Australia. The ANMF has outlined the specific role of nurses and midwives in identifying victims of abuse and facilitating access to support networks, while maintaining privacy and confidentiality.

Key learning outcomes

At the end of this module participants will be able to: 

  1. define the special populations at risk of interpersonal abuse and family violence
  2. identify the steps in screening for abuse and family violence
  3. describe the nine steps to intervention in situations of violence (the 9Rs)
  4. understand why safety and risk assessments are valuable tools to help appropriately support survivors of abuse
  5. understand the importance of documentation, as well as adhering to legal and professional obligations, while maintaining patient confidentiality in cases of abuse or violence.
