This four-hour module focuses on care of people who come to Victoria as refugees or asylum seekers. It has been created by EACH refugee health.

Each year approximately 4000 refugees settle in this state. There are also thousands of people seeking asylum living in the community. A significant number of these people live in rural and regional Victoria. It is therefore highly likely that in your nursing role, no matter in what clinical setting, you will care for people of refugee or asylum seeker backgrounds.

Key learning outcomes

The key learning outcomes for this module are to:

  1. differentiate key terms commonly associated with people of refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds
  2. briefly outline the role of a Victorian-based refugee health nurse
  3. describe four other health and/or social agencies that provide assistance for people of refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds in Victoria
  4. describe the role of the Humanitarian Settlement Program (HSP) in Victoria
  5. describe the relationship between health literacy and health outcomes for people of refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds
  6. describe four benefits of using a trained interpreter when providing nursing care for people of refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds
  7. list four risks of using untrained interpreters
  8. briefly outline six essential elements of a refugee/asylum seeker health assessment
  9. describe four common health issues for people of refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds.

Course Duration in Hours: 4

1.5 CPD hours.  

This module will discuss terms and concepts as well as some common health concerns. It also includes suggestions for communicating with LGBTIQA+ people, providing them with good service, and creating a safe, affirming and inclusive environment.

Key learning outcomes

By the end of the module, participants will:

  1. know the general terms generally used within the LGBTQIAt+ community to describe gender, sexual identity and sexual orientation
  2. understand the barriers for LGBTIQA+ people in accessing healthcare
  3. know the health concerns that many LGBTIQA+ people may have or may be vulnerable to
  4. identify ways a health service can create a more welcoming environment
  5. identify ways an individual working in a health service can create a welcoming environment.

Course Duration in Hours: 1.5

1 hour CPD.   

This module outlines the impact of historical policies on the current burden of disease, including social and emotional wellbeing. 

The principles of community-controlled primary healthcare and the development of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services will be discussed, along with the national campaign and government response to close the gap in health disparities.

Key learning outcomes

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the current health inequities and burden of disease.
  2. Identify how historical acts of administration in Australia have created historical and current health inequities and distress.
  3. Define social and emotional wellbeing and identify the corresponding cultural needs.
  4. Understand the link between racism and psychological distress.
  5. Understand the nurse and midwife's role in closing the gap and providing culturally safe care.
